My Students

What was your favorite subject in school? Now imagine being denied participation in it due to lack of funding. For many students in our school, band is a highlight of their day. Sadly, we do not have enough instruments and materials to accommodate all children who desire to participate in band.

My students are a joy to behold.

They are talented, determined and filled with boundless energy. They love being members of our band and treat the instruments with a great deal of respect. The band in our school has won numerous competitions and our students participate in a multitude of local and regional festivals. All of this is done in spite of a severe lack of resources. While our school is not rich in material possessions, we are quite wealthy due to the wonderful diversity of our students. Music brings together students from all backgrounds into a unique learning community.

My Project

At the present time, students who play saxophone are forced to share their instrument with another student. This inhibits their ability to take the instruments home to practice. Furthermore, many of our saxophones are in poor condition, as some of them have been in our school since the 1970's. A new saxophone would give more students the opportunity to bring an instrument home to practice, and more students will have a working instrument to play in class. The new cases are essential because many of our cases are being held together by duct tape and bungee cords. The remaining items are for cleaning, lubricating and maintaining our aging inventory of instruments. These basic supplies will help keep our equipment in good condition.

Most of the children enter the band room having never played an instrument before.

They leave with a new skill that will remain with them for the rest of their lives. Our band program is growing at a time when budgets for the arts are being slashed nation wide. By supporting this project, you will help my students continue to benefit from the incredible gift of music.
