My Students
A smile, a hug, and a strong-spirited high five: these are the ways my students start their learning day .
Our Pre-K Center is located in a low-income area where many families are new to the country.
Most of our students are the first in their families to learn how to speak English. As they grow older, they will become the translators for their parents and guardians, not only sharing immediate information, but also explaining concepts and ideas to help navigate their families in their new home.
My Project
My students are investigating the various properties of light and are making connections based on how objects absorb, reflect, or filter light. During our explorations, we noticed how Rembrandt used light in his painting, particularly his portraits. As we discussed this, the students were interested in exploring how they can use light to create masterpieces like Rembrandt. To make this an authentic experience, we voted on using canvases when we created our artwork.
We ask that you take a moment, notice a shadow on the sidewalk, gaze upon the shadows within a Rembrandt painting, and ponder how a five-year-old would interpret that aspect of the world.
Our project aims at exploring that exact concept. With your donation, we will be able to fully integrate the art of a classical painter into a student-selected, real world investigation. By assisting in this integration of the arts across our classroom subjects, you can help students to develop problem-solving and critical-thinking skills. Arts integration also helps to increase Literacy skills for English Language Learners, as it stimulates memory, facilitates comprehension, and builds self-confidence in students.
