This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

In first grade, students are learning about various vocabulary words in reading, math, and science. Students also learn high-frequency words, sight words, and decodable words during their reading time. These words are important for students to recognize during reading time, when students access texts with the words. That is where this project comes into play.

My project is seeking highlighter colors, as well as pencils, to identify various vocabulary words and important words during reading, math, and science time!

The various highlighter colors will be used to identify specific words in texts. Yellow will be for decodable words, green for sight words and high-frequency words, blue for past words, and purple for vocabulary words. Studies show that when students are first able to identify these words in texts prior to reading, it helps to enhance their reading abilities, pick up fluency in reading, and help them become more aware overall about words they are working on in isolation before they read them in a text.

My project is also seeking pencils, for everyday writing tasks students need to complete! Most of our pencils are broken or have diminished erasers, so these new pencils will support us a lot!
