Shine a Light on Reading Reinforcement in Social Studies
Help me give my students a listening center with a lamp to create a well lit Reading Reinforcement Station with a tablet and maps to allow extra access to lessons and materials online.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students come from the north side of Houston. Their households are mainly lower income, and they have limited access to college graduates. These students are very limited in their exposure to the world outside of their neighborhood. The majority of my students are minorities and quite a few of them have had reading problems in their elementary years, but they are fighters. They refuse to be ignored and they expect sincerity and authenticity from the adults in their lives, eventhough that is rarely what they have been given.
My students are special because they live in a community that does not often get access to opportunities, but that does not stop them from trying.
They have "can do" spirits and attitudes. They constantly challenge me to bring my "A" game to the classroom everyday. They expect to come to school to learn and they know that this is where their futures begin. The classroom is our place of refuge and we treat it as such.
My Project
As I teach the district's curriculum, I often find that some students do not master all of the objectives required. I also find that as I teach certain skills, some students need different reinforcements to master needed skills. This listening station will allow students time to go back over those skills which they could not master in a supported environment without the embarrassment of having to let everyone know.
Pride is big in middle school, and this center allows students to succeed, and keep their pride intact.
Students are able to review any lesson with confidence. This should not only bring up the mastery of the different objectives and skills, but also protect the students' self esteem.
