My Students
The fifth-grade students at our school are constantly working toward being stewards of our watershed, empowered decision makers, historians and conscientious community members. We are located in south-central Montana, just north of Yellowstone National Park. We are an active, outdoorsy and environmentally aware class. Being engaged with our "backyard" keeps us connected to our watershed.
Our daily goal is to explore learning through personal experience and modeling.
The fifth graders of our school value the knowledge they acquire in this year of study, and some students reflect upon graduation that it was their favorite.
My Project
Kids with ADHD and other attention deficit disorders love to wiggle and because this chair (Kore Teen Active Chair) rocks it provides them with a secondary focus. Kids that struggle to stay focused, can satisfy their physical irritability while remaining mentally on task. This chair has also been proven to be revolutionary in helping teachers accommodate Autism.
Thinking and producing quality, ability appropriate work requires focus.
Ear muffs, or sound reduction muffs, help students block out distracting noises around them so they can focus. Having socially acceptable accommodations available for all students to choose helps reduce the stigmatization for those with the highest need for the accommodation.
A class set of sound reduction ear muffs provides access for all students to self monitor their needs for focus. Having a flexible seat choice also helps students learn to self-regulate their needs. Requesting a class set of Wobble Chairs is not financially responsible, so four will serve as a test to see if we can share. If the usage results are staggeringly positive... I'll look to further invest in more.
