My Students
My kids love math, they just don't know it yet! I want my students to have a fun, exploratory relationship with numbers and shapes. With these manipulatives and games, my students can take their math thinking to the next level and math can be a time of joyful learning!
I work in a very under-resourced school, in a socioeconomically challenged urban area of California.
My students are tremendously hard-working given the challenges they face each day. Many of them are English Language Learners, some of them have learning differences, and all of them are only 8 or 9! We teach a very demanding curriculum to these young scholars and providing them with tools that reduce stress and make learning fun is critical to the success of our classroom.
My Project
I often teach math in centers, so that I can work with the students in small groups. These materials would allow us to have several new, exciting centers for independent practice! It would also help me to better align the centers with 3rd grade math standards. With the computer games, we could now use our classroom computers as a part of a money center or a measurement center. With the regrouping kits for addition and subtraction my students could have hands on independent practice with one of the most critical concepts taught in 3rd grade: multi-digit addition and subtraction. We could also use the fraction kits for a fractions center! These resources will truly inspire my students to engage with math concepts because they are hands-on, interactive, and inspired by real-life concepts like allowance or using the ATM.
These math materials will bring math to life in our classroom!
They will help my students to develop the numeracy and geometry sense they need to be successful in elementary and middle school, and best of all, the students will be smiling while they learn!!
