Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our public high school is in the heart of Brooklyn, NY, and all of our students are recent immigrants to the U.S., hailing from South Asia, Central America, West Africa, and East Asia, and other corners of the world. They represent a variety of different educational backgrounds, native languages, religions, cultures, and world views. What brings them together is a common eagerness to be at home in this country.
The majority of our students are from low-income families and many of their parents have lost their source of income during the COVID-19 shutdown.
This makes it especially difficult for our students to be prepared to start college in the fall. On top of economic stress, our seniors are battling isolation and the uncertainty of what comes next for them. With COVID-19 keeping us apart from each other, we need to support our students more than ever.
My Project
It's going to be hard to say goodbye to M., as she is a shining star both in the classroom and out. An avid reader, M. dreams of becoming a detective; she loves solving problems and unraveling puzzles. Student M. is such a rock star--she's faced incredible challenges and obstacles but she is graduating and soaring ahead into a bright future.
Please help me send her off to college with a library of great reads, a printer, and some personal care products so that she feels surrounded by love and support!
