My Students

Ours is a public magnet school. Students travel from all over town to attend our school. We are not without our struggles, especially when it comes to the school budget. Despite everything, though, our students achieve. Over 90% go on to college; 10% get full scholarships. Our students are diverse and revel in their differences. Groups of friends are multicultural. They are engaged and very bright. These great kids give me hope for the future. Teaching my students is so rewarding. I strive to help them become more creative.

As one of the top schools in the city, our students overcome many obstacles to reach their educational goals.

Art is a way for students to develop creative personal expression. Students are encouraged to be self sufficient in the art room. Choice-based learning in art is new to us. Its a great way for each student to research and learn so much more than before. Students need safe access to organized supplies. Right now we have a hodge-podge of plastic, aging shelves. Supplies currently stored in boxes make it hard to see what is available. Sturdy, ample shelving with neat bins will give students better access to our art supplies.

My Project

It's hard to make art when you don't know where the supplies are kept. Art supplies are now stored in cardboard shipping boxes, crammed on old shelving. Students in our choice-based art room scavenge through boxes in supply closets seeking the right materials to express their creative ideas. In the room, a collection of old A.V. carts hold gallons of paint and sculpture supplies. We have some great art supplies, the problem is getting to them. Our storage needs a better solution.

When 22 students are busily constructing their work, they need to be able to know where materials are stored.

In addition, students need to store their work safely for the next time. As students make their artwork, they research methods and artists, and strive to express their interests. Whether they use light-pads, printmaking supplies, or clay, knowing where supplies are makes for unrestricted creativity. In the closets, we need to organize our supplies better in clear bins on sturdy shelving. In the classroom, shelving on wheels could be moved to where supplies are needed. The units I've selected through Donors Choose fit the configuration of the closets and room much better than the mish-mass of second-hand, dilapidated carts and shelves we currently use. Please help us get new shelves and bins. When supplies are accessible and organized, students can better focus on creativity and art production.
