Shelving and Storage for New High School Sculpture Class

My students need a shelving rack and canvas table top to hold their 3-D sculpture projects that they will be making this year in our new sculpture course.

My Students

I teach at a large public high school on the south side of Chicago with over 1,800 students. Most of my students receive free and reduced lunch, 85% are African American. Being a large school we are able to offer many AP courses and interesting elective classes. Our visual arts program is phenomenal and is a reason that many students come to our school. After taking a year of Art 1 students are able to choose to expand their skills and take photography, digital media, or painting and drawing courses. This year will will also be offering sculpture for the first time. The students and myself are very excited to spend a year building and creating both functional and applied arts and also large installations.

My Project

We need these big shelves so that students can create large scale sculpture projects. With these shelves each table of students will have their own shelf to store the projects they are working on. There is not enough counter space for students to leave their work on, and by putting these shelving units in a closet the work will be safe from anyone trying to touch them before they are complete.

The canvas will be used for our ceramics unit.

I will staple the canvas to large sheets of plywood, creating a canvas table top, so that the sculpture class can use ceramics and easily clean it up before my art one classes come and use the same classroom.
