Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a third year teacher (former Teach For America) working in a high-need urban community. This year I will be co-teaching a second grade ESOL support classroom. Most of my students are of either Puerto Rican or Dominican descent.

The building in which I teach is very big and very old. It serves about 1000 students K-4. Unfortunately, as a large school with limited resources and high needs, expensive purchases, such as furniture and art materials, are not often provided for within the budget. In my classroom, we are in serious need of a tray table to organize writing paper. We have 40 little aspiring authors who need help organizing their papers for brainstorming, drafting, and publishing. We are asking for clay in order to construct butterfly models in the spring during our Science unit focused on butterflies. The "I AM!" book will go along with our Walt Whitman "I am large. I contain multitudes" daily affirmation.

A new tray table will allow us to create a writing center in which papers are easily accessible to students and stored in a manner that is organized and neat. By purchasing clay for my classroom, you will provide students the opportunity to have a tactile learning experience and construct clay butterfly models. The "I AM!" affirmation book will help our students learn to appreciate all that they are as they grow and develop into little wonders.

Your support is needed and appreciated. Your generosity will facilitate an organized, interactive classroom for students this year and in years to come.
