My students need 38 sheep hearts for dissection. Many of my students are gifted and want to attend the medical magnet program at their local high school. Studying an actual heart gives them a hands on approach to learning.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Dissection gives students a hands on approach to learning about the human body. One specimen I use is the heart of a sheep.
We have always dissected specimens in life science, but this year we have no funding for consumables. We do have all of the necessary dissection tools.
I use the sheep heart since it is similar to the human heart. I have honors students in my classes who are interested in attending the local medical magnet high school. Dissection gives groups of four students each a chance to actually see the chambers of the heart and learn how it works. Prior to dissecting the heart, many of my students expect it to look like a valentine.
Funding sheep hearts for classroom dissection will give my students a chance to see an actual heart and perhaps inspire them to pursue careers in medicine. Thank you.
