My Project
This will be my first year as a second grade, self-contained ED Special Education Teacher. The last two school years, I have fulfilled the role of second grade, first grade, and kindergarten inclusion special education teacher, each year being split between two grades and providing disciplinary assistance to fellow teachers. I understand that our students are learning from us how to solve social problems and require safe spaces to change the way they think to do this.
Students today desperately need to learn how to regulate their emotions and manage their behaviors.
I have composed a wish list of several items that will help me and my para-professionals create a safe and welcoming environment for my students to come learn and implement the emotional regulation skills they are taught, to help them be successful in their academic work within and outside the school. The sensory items, wobble seats, weighted vest, and timers can help in various capacities, but their goals are to help my students with managing behaviors, feeling safe, and minimizing distractions to help them stay focused. The laminator, folding chair, and timer will help create a space zone where students go and carry out their planned break and daily regulation check-ins. Various other tools will be used by the staff to help better communicate with students, provide instruction, carry out the lessons, and create visuals for students to utilize within the classroom to help them be successful.
The students I have coming into my classroom next year are kind, sweet, and generous. They just need a little help when their feelings are too big to understand. Please help me, help them.
