My students have music only once a week for 45 minutes and only for half the school year. So, it is crucial that I make those precious minutes of music learning as meaningful and powerful as they possibly can be. I am eager to help my students to grow in their musicality. The sky’s the limit!
Music can and should be an avenue for my students to express themselves, focus on being creative and let go of some of their worries for a while.
Many of my students speak Spanish as their first language, although some come from as far away as Nepal. A significant percentage of the student population is learning to speak English, while still being held to high standards of learning and achievement in primarily English-based curricula. Music should also bolster their self esteem and help them to feel more positive about coming to school; in order for that to happen, I need to help my students make personal connections to music class, to make music learning worth a lot to them. I hope that if they know people are investing in their music success, they will value music class.
My Project
We have ten sets of diatonic Boomwhackers (the white keys on the piano), but no chromatic BWs. The middle school students playing ukuleles can team up with other classes on BWs in performance, if we have BWs that are limited to the C-major scale. This project will add seven sets of the sharps and flats - the black keys on the piano - to our music classroom.
Chromatic Boomwhackers add spice to our music, and allow our music theory studies to advance to more complex concepts.
