Making a connection to what we read can be difficult at times, but by creating story boards we are able to create the connections we are looking for.
I have the joy and luxury of teaching a wonderful group of 5th grade students in a low socioeconomic community.
Living in a rural area, there’s not much of an opportunity for art and creativity classes offered to the students.
However, at times, the students I teach are not given the opportunity to express themselves much through art due to funding and proration. I find that many of them are learning more than I thought they were because they would rather show what they are learning through creativity. Many of my students find it difficult at times to express their thoughts through art but after time they prefer to show what they learning through art rather than paper and pencil.
My Project
I am requesting poster board for my students to create story boards about stories they have read. Creating these story boards will give the students an opportunity to make a connection to what they are reading and to share their peers. In order to create these story boards, we also need colored pencils and crayons to make the story boards colorful and vivid.
While creating our story boards, we need to keep our pencils and crayons sharpened. Therefore, we are in need of two electronic pencil sharpeners in our classroom. Our wall mounted pencil sharpener cannot keep up with our need of these artists. My students desire to be creative while continuing to show what they are learning and to keep art in the classrooms.
With your help, my creative students can continue to express what they are learning using their artistic side.
Keeping art in the curriculum will hopefully inspire my students to continue with their creativity.
Learning should not always be typical paper and pencil, lets allow our students to show their creative side. I am hoping that I inspire some of my students to continue on in the Arts whether it is drawing, painting, musical, visual arts, or whatever it may be but to excel in what they are doing. Art is a wonderful part of our society that should be carried on forever.
