"Sitting still is overrated. It makes sense for the opera or for meditating, but in most classrooms and child care centers, it's given far more honor than it deserves. Children need to move." ~Tom Hunter, National Association for the Education of Young Children.
This quote best explains our need to help our classroom purchase the disc seats.
My sixth grade students are an active group who are bursting with energy! They are an engaged group of students who show up everyday to learn.
Due to our rural district my students may often be on the bus for up to an hour sitting prior to coming to class. Our school has around 400 students with a 50% population at free or reduced lunch. We are a Title I school and I strive to meet the needs of a very diverse population of students, including those with ADHD, autism, other learning and processing disabilities as well as physical disabilities.
My Project
I plan to let alternating groups of students use the cushions at their seats each day. Of course, students will have a choice in whether or not to use the discs. I anticipate that those students who most need the sensory stimulation will choose to use the cushions the most.
I am requesting 15 sensory seat discs to allow my students to 'move' while they learn in class.
The cushions will increase their time on task since they will have a way to be constantly moving without interrupting. This time of movement will provide the sensory input many of my students need to attend better. I am looking forward to seeing an increase in concentration, attentiveness, and learning in my classroom.
