Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Help enhance math class for our future mathematicians, accountants, and stockbrokers.
My middle school students attend a charter school in Illinois.
Not only do they take their education very seriously, but they consistently demonstrate the values of good character (including responsibility, trustworthiness, fairness, caring, and citizenship).
My Project
While a few of my students own manual pencil sharpeners (which leave shavings all over the floor), most of my students come to class without a sharpened pencil. Since I teach Math, my students are required to use pencils they are able to easily erase their mistakes. With two electric pencil sharpeners, my students can have access to a useful writing utensil that they can use to solve the area of a right triangle, an order of operations problem, or give an example of the commutative property of addition.
Along with pencils, we also rely on songs and videos to enhance instruction. Unfortunately, the speakers we currently use are of very poor quality and can only be heard by the students up front. With a set of brand new speakers, my 8th graders throughout the classroom will be able to sing along to the diameter and circumference song, while my sixth graders can sing along to the sounds of fractions.
Two pencil sharpeners and a set of computer speakers equal Middle School Mathematical EXCELLENCE!
Utilizing our sixty minute Math periods to their fullest will help instill the importance of Mathematical inquiry and development, which in turn will lead to successful future careers.
