My fifth graders live in an urban environment and encounter more blockades to achieving an education than anyone could imagine. All in all, they give it their best shot and come to school to "work" their brains to the max!
Daily it is a struggle to keep students "outfitted" with writing supplies. Buying supplies is not a priority for families. Picture students lined up, waiting to use a pencil sharpener that is the "clunker" of all time.
Last year, we went through several hand (table mounted) pencil sharpeners, the electric pencil sharpener "bit the dust" and was retired. Frequently, I had to run to the store for additional pencils for students. If we can have pencils "ready to go" then we will be able to spend extra minutes learning. Therefore, my students need an electric pencil sharpener, a container to hold ready-to-go pencils, pocket size sharpeners, pencils and golf pencils.
