Sharks Please!

My Students

Students passionate about animals want hands on experiences. To teach a child all about sharks is one thing. To give them a shark and let them see for themselves is another.

My students are passionate about animals.

They have all voluntarily signed up for a college prep course, zoology. These students are dedicated to education and enjoy learning. They excel when given the opportunity and most will continue onto collegiate and graduate studies. The more experiences and opportunities they receive while in high school, will aid in their success.

My Project

Each sharks requested will allow a group of 4 students to analyze the external and internal anatomy of the shark. The students will get to feel the placoid (raised scales) a shark possesses. They will be able to see the lateral line system, the teeth structure, and varying other characteristics unique to cartilage fish. After observing the external anatomy the students will then dissect the sharks. They will witness the enormous liver of a shark and understand how a shark maintains its bouancy when they place a piece of the liver in a glass of water and realizes it floats. They will follow the entire digestive tract, and some will even find pup's in the mothers oviducts/uterus.

I have done this dissection with previous students and they LOVE it.

They are are intrigued and engaged beyond measures. At the end of the year students say this was the most amazing lab they have ever done. They will remember the experience and share their knowledge with many others. This lesson will also study the environmental impact humans have caused to sharks. By understanding their anatomy, students will be able to see the cause and effect of human interactions on a shark's success.
