I teach Language Arts and Social Studies to approximately 50 fifth graders each day. Many of these students learn best using a hands-on approach.
My students have diverse backgrounds.
They are eager to please and often want to expand upon what they are being taught. They do this by asking questions, conducting research, working in small groups, and creating projects to go along with the lessons they have been taught.
My Project
I. Love. To. Read. One of my biggest goals throughout the school year is to instill a love for reading into each one of my students, like the love I have for reading. After all, it is a gift I can give to them that no one can take away. With various backgrounds and home lives, reading can give my students a way to escape their everyday lives and travel through time and various places in their minds.
Last year, I fell in love with the book Wonder. It is a book that teaches kindness, and I believe it is a must read for all 5th grade students. Another book that is equally good for teaching acceptance and kindness is Fish in a Tree. This book has been chosen as the October Read Aloud book across the nation. My students will use these books as I read them aloud to follow along and to then complete novel study activities and projects.
Read alouds are extremely beneficial and necessary within the classroom as they teach students how to read fluently, show them how to make connections throughout their reading, help them become lost in books, and teach them about new books.
Both of these books will teach my students the meaning of kindness and why it is important to be accepting of others, no matter how different they may be. These books will weave this lesson into their lives for years to come.
