Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My students represent a diverse cultural population. More than thirteen languages are identified in the community with 72% of students having a home language other than English. My classroom has 87% English language learners representing five different home-spoken languages. Our forth grade classroom is focusing on writing and the students need photographs to inspire and help express what they want to write. Forth grade is an important year for writing for my students. They are writing autobiographies and are having trouble finding topics that they are inspired by, compounded by the fact that they are still blossoming English writers. They have wonderful things to say and share with the world. I want to incorporate a photography experience with their writing assignments. By using photography, they will be able to create personal prompts, inspire their writing, and supplement their expression through words with their own images. I need one-time use cameras for each of my students so they can use and keep their cameras with them at all times for a week, documenting their lives, community, and interests. Once completed, cameras will be sent in for developing. The resulting pictures will be used throughout the year for inclusion into and to motivate their writing. By helping students illustrate their own lives, you can help inspire their love of writing.
