Sharing Science Stories- Improving Science Journalism

My Students

My students are overflowing with curiosity! They have millions of questions and I tirelessly search for ways to provide them with opportunities to ask those questions and discover the answers. They love to get out of the classroom and have real world experiences where learning comes alive.

My students are explorers that want to document the excitement of their learning adventures and share their stories.

Being in an urban setting limits our ability to explore nature. Through local organizations and partnerships we provide multiple opportunities for students to get out in nature to explore, make connections, and learn in ways that aren't possible in the classroom.

My Project

Exploration has helped drive progress in our species and society. Providing students with opportunities to explore new places and learn in unique settings allows them to make connections and ask new questions to help drive their learning. Through local partnerships and community programs, our school takes students on many trips throughout the year to experience local cultural institutions and have new experiences such as camping, hiking, kayaking, and fishing.

These opportunities to explore and experience nature are new and exciting and students want to document and share them.

Working with a professional photographer, I have developed lessons on nature photography and documenting experiences. We practice our skills in the classroom and around the school to prepare for our explorations. We have one camera, but students have requested a higher quality camera to make their photographs look professional.

Using the photos, students will complete science journalism projects and create photo stories. Their projects will showcase their explorations and learning story and will be shared with our school and local community. Students will also have the opportunity to use the camera to document other school functions and activities and will be shared on screens throughout the school.
