This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Hello! I have been an elementary teacher for three years now and next year I will be teaching Kindergarten! This is a very exciting opportunity! However, I teach the 2nd grade at a small urban school in Illinois. This fall I will have over 30 Kindergarteners in my classroom! Our classroom will include a majority of students who are English Language Learners. Most will speak Spanish as their native language but come from a wide variety of backgrounds. Our school is also an "over flow" school, meaning that when a student's neighborhood school is full, he or she rides the bus to our school. We will have students from all areas of the city and students newly arrived from the suburbs in our classroom. We will form a diverse community of learners!

Can you imagine starting Kindergarten without a pencil?! The problem is that our school and many of our students do not have the money for basic school supplies! Our entire school qualifies for a free breakfast program and nearly 80% of our students qualify for free lunch. And school supplies can get expensive! However, pencils, markers, crayons, scissors, glue and folders are essential materials for engaging students in learning!

Now, imagine walking into your first day of Kindergarten and finding a wonderful selection of pencils, markers, glue, scissors and crayons all there for you and your classmates to share! I have asked for most of the supplies in bulk (to be cost effective!) and because the school supplies will be shared by our Kindergarten class. Having school supplies to share will help create a community environment in our classroom! I have also included a few fun supplies such as glitter glue sticks and multi-cultural colored pencils to engage my Kindergarteners in hands-on art activities. These school supplies may sound basic but the students will use them for both academic learning and social skills such as sharing!

Your generous donation will ensure that our Kindergarten classroom is full of supplies. This will foster an environment stocked for learning. It will also provide school supplies for many of my students who can't afford to bring their own. But no worries because we will be able to share all of these wonderful supplies that encourage learning! Thanks so much for taking the time to read my proposal!
