My Students

I want my students to recognize that their immigration experiences, while all truly unique, are also universal and an beautiful opportunity to teach others.
My students are all newly arrived immigrants from over 45 countries around the world.
They have all experienced a profound change in their lives, leaving their home countries for a life in New York. Many have experienced trauma, either leaving unsafe conditions and risking their lives to come here, and/or entering into a very unfamiliar life with families who may be strangers to them, in a city that can be harsh even for its natives. My students are profound, caring, and deeply wise beyond their years. My school is an extremely welcoming place, where they feel safe and supported as they make this major transition.
My Project
My students need a laptop, and accessories such as Microsoft Office and Apple USB SuperDrive. With these resources, my students will have the opportunity to share their immigration stories with other students around the country. The laptop will enable my class to participate in live video calls with interested partner classrooms. Our hope is that through their stories, people will begin to see the value immigrants add to this country instead of seeing them as a threat. We will be posting these stories in various formats and as a blog. If funded, this project will help bring my students' stories alive. Further, I'm happy to share my methodology. I would be excited to share all work done on this project in this year or future years and partner with any other interested teachers.
