Sharing Our Identity to Educate Others with Digital Storytelling
My students need iPads to help in telling their story. They will share their identity with others in hopes of being better understood. Gifted students will create movies to help in professional development for their teachers.
My students are very special. We are in a Title I community where resources are slim but curiosity is high! I teach gifted students in grades 3 through 5. They are a very hands-on, minds-on group of students.
People who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones that do.
Technology is the voice of today. So many students are watching YouTube and acquiring knowledge that I want my students to be able to voice their identity. As gifted students, feelings of not fitting in and being the outcast seem to come naturally to them. I want the students to feel free to tell their stories so others may be able to identify and know they are not alone in this world.
The culture is a very diverse population with a growing Hispanic population. Resources outside of school are slim, and I feel it is my responsibility to feed their passion to learn while they are with me at school. If my students can tell their stories and help change one student's life, I would like to be able to have to tools available for them to share their gifted quirks with the world!
My Project
Telling your story is not always easy, but must be done in order to help educate others. We need iPads to tell our stories.
Being a gifted child is hard.
These students are not always understood or appreciated for their strengths, especially if they are verbal! I feel the students will gain a better sense of self-confidence if they are able to educate the faculty on being identified gifted and what it means to them. Identity is the first thing a gifted child needs to grasp in order to understand themselves. Both their learning and school lives will vastly improve if they are truly understood through storytelling.
