My Students
This year I get the honor of creating and teaching a High School course in Queer History. This course is the first of its kind for my district, and we need resources to make it work. This project will improve our school's collection of non-academic queer resources.
The 1700 students at our school represent a variety of backgrounds (ethnic, religious, citizenship, economic, etc), united to provide a supportive environment for students who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, genderqueer, and even CIS-Gendered.
Thanks to its amazing students, our school is often highly ranked (locally, statewide, and even nationwide) in terms of achievement in academics, sports, and extracurricular activities. These students are inspiring, and they definitely have great plans to make our future world a better one.
My Project
The books in this project come from a variety of genres, depicting a variety of ethnicity, with a variety of authors and story lines. What unites them is their depiction of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Gender Fluid, and other Queer Identities. Having these books as part of our school library collection will make a huge impact on the safety and knowledge of our community
For students who identify as queer, it will be empowering and comforting to see themselves in the characters positively portrayed in these books.
For cisgendered and straight students, it will be enlightening for them to read gripping tales where the protagonist lives a life dramatically different, yet startling similar to their own. It is our hope that through reading these books, all students will gain a greater understanding of their shared humanity.
