My students live in Goffstown and New Boston, NH -- I want to broaden their experience of the world and what better way is there then Hungry Planet? This book includes stories and recipes as well as pictures of families from around the world. The premise is to share what a family eats each week. It is highly accessible for students who do not have much experience beyond our tiny little towns.
This book is set up brilliantly for classroom use: First, it introduces a family through full-color photographs and shares their personal story.
This includes having the family put a week's worth of food on their family table -- from junk food laden American tables to farm-to-table Chinese tables to the blanket of a refugee family, the book tells beautiful stories about real people in the most common-shared experience in the world. Each family also shares a recipe and highlights of their life.
Because the book is separated into 32 families in 24 countries, I am able to give each student in my class his own family. He will be able to read the story and then do research on the country prompted by this story. He will then create a presentation comparing and contrasting this story to his own. Finally, these stories will be shared in class so all can experience the vast similarities and differences between the people of our world.
