My Students
Our elementary school houses a diverse community of almost 600 learners with a wide range of backgrounds and income levels in grades K - 5. Our majority minority community of learners live with in the county seat of Brooks County, Ga. Located as far south in Georgia as one can be, our students come from non-traditional families often being raised by their grandparents, single parent, or other guardian. While our town is full of cotton fields as far as the eye can see, groves of peach pecan trees, their is little industry for a working guardian to support their often large families. This has caused the median income in our community to be roughly $22,000, which is well below the national average.
Due to the hardships these situations put on the families within our community, our students do not often see successful adults that look like them or understand their living conditions and diverse family situations.
It is the mission of our school system to take these hardships and turn them on their head. We are currently taking on a mission in with as a district we pledge to educate and inspire every student.
My Project
The most successful way to improve the reading achievement of low-income children is to increase their access to print. Because 61% of low-income families have no age-appropriate books in their Homes, creating a steady stream of new, age-appropriate books has been shown to nearly triple interest in reading within months. We know that children growing up in homes with at least 20 books get 3 years more schooling than children from homes without books; therefore, placing books in the hands and homes of first-grade students is critical to improving the literacy crisis in our country.
With this in mind, Malcolm Mitchell, a current NFL player, who grew up 30 minutes from us will not only be sharing his love and passion for reading but also putting a book in every student's hand.
