My Students

Do you remember taking a class trip to Washington D.C? The museums, monuments, and government organizations are some of the richest educational resources that our nation has -- but only if you have the means to get there, which many of my students do not.

Our students are interested in issues of national importance -- history, ethics, journalism, and more.

They wish to study these topics at the deepest level, and in some cases pursue careers that relate to them. However, many of them will be the first generation in their families to go to college, and they need exposure to the cultural institutions and ideas that will make them ready to engage with their academics after graduating from high school.

My Project

The trip will serve two different student groups at school because sharing is important and it makes the funds stretch farther! The students in our school's African American Literature Class have been studying how different cultures interact. They want to take a trip to the Holocaust Museum and contrast Jewish resistance with African American resistance - showing the similarities in the two stories. The students in our school's Journalism class have been creating media of all kinds this school year. They want to take a trip to the Newseum to view the permanent and rotation exhibits, and to also participate in a specialized class on the topic of our choice.

Both classes will also have a chance to visit other museums and monuments on the National mall -- a chance to learn more about our government, culture, and traditions.

Like all good field trips, our students will not just be learning more about a particular subject, but having an experience that will broaden their horizons.
