Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students are passionate about art making and celebrating the arts with our school community. They are also passionate about the natural world and everything in it. This project will allow me to launch a ceramics program for both middle and high school students that focuses on an appreciation and commitment to environmentalism through art.
Students will engage with and explore themes that are rooted in the natural world—such as an examination of plants, of animals in their ecosystems, or of biodiversity—and the effects of climate change.
They will then shape their projects based on this research, one piece of clay at a time. All supplies and materials will be used to kick start the program: drying racks, clay, glazes and sculpting tools, among other things. In this time of fast-moving technology, please help me provide students with opportunities to slow down and create meaningful projects with their hands and to connect to the world around them.
Our school's minority student enrollment is 97%. The student-teacher ratio is 13:1. The student population is made up of 48% female students and 52% male students. The school enrolls 87% economically disadvantaged students.
