My students need 5 sets of shape drums to better understand the science behind music. Size determines the pitch of the instruments and these drums will show them that!

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My classroom is full of enthusiastic students that are so excited to learn something new in music! They are always very eager to try new things and learn different subjects in a new way!
My students come from families of hard workers where usually both parents are working and providing for their family.
They care a lot about their children and want the best for them. My students do their very best with what they are provided with and flourish when given the opportunities.
My school is a title one school, meaning that over 80% of our families qualify for free or reduced priced lunch. They are rich in desire and drive and with the proper tools and opportunities will go far in life.
My Project
I'm looking forward to using these drums in my Science of Sound unit. I have been wanting to expand the unit to use an instrument that looks the same but sounds different because of their size. With these sound shape drums, we will explore how size changes the pitch of an instrument and why sound waves are different sizes depending on the instrument. My performance groups will also create new drum pieces using the different sizes and explore how to create melodies on an instrument that usually is not used for melodic pieces.
My children thrive off of opportunities and new ways to learn.
I want to give them the ability to be taught a unit in many different ways. To use these shape drums to show them the difference between high and low pitch will really help them open their minds to the concept and then be able to see the concept used in the world around them. We use the poem in my classroom; Small is High, Big is Low, That is science we must know. Now they will see it first hand!
