Shapes are everywhere! Helping students at my school understand that is a difficult task at time. My school serves students from pre-k to 8th grade. Many of our students come from very low income homes where learning and exploring our world is a low priority. All of our students receive free lunch.
In my class, there are several students who are bilingual and two who are ELL students.
Hands-on activities are a way to break through the language barrier for them and for me. Our languages may be different, but many actions are universal!
My Project
My students need manipultives to build and explore shapes. The common core state standards for geometry require students to identify basic shapes, to build and combine shapes, and to sort shapes by attribute. Your donations will help purchase different types of objects and materials for students to build, combine, explore and sort shapes.
Little fingers like to stay busy creating new things!
My students will use the "Dive into Shapes" kit to build their own 2d and 3d shapes in learning centers. They will use the "Sorting Shapes Presents" to work collaboratively with classmates in small groups to sort shapes.
We spend a lot of time in centers in the afternoon. The more materials the students have available to them, the more learning options they have. The more learning options they have, the more excitement they will have for learning. At this age, we want children to embrace learning with enthusiasm and excitement.
