This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Teachers have a great task in front of them - to make abstract concepts concrete. The best way to do this is through consistent, hands-on exploration of new ideas. But, having the tools to explore with is key.
I teach first grade in an impoverished community in urban Illinois.
Nearly all of my students are eligible for free or reduced-priced lunch. Despite the economic hardship in our school's neighborhood, my students come to school excited to learn. They are eager learners and want to excel.
We have the luxury of having ample time to work on math skills, and part of this involves hands-on exploration of manipulatives and playing math games. While we have the materials we need for most units, we lack the materials for an entire unit devoted to classifying shapes.
My Project
I am requesting a class set of two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes. Students will use these in "toolkits" to reference throughout our studies of shapes and their attributes. Students will create shape sorts with one another, sorting by common properties, such as the number of corners; construct new shapes with smaller shapes; and use communication skills to describe structures they build with the cones, cylinders, and cubes. These activities will encourage open-ended thinking, promote communication skills, and give students the opportunity to explore abstract ideas in concrete, physical and visual ways.
With your donation, we can help students become successful mathematicians, thinkers, and communicators.
Students will be able to think outside the cube - err, box - and create and think in new ways. Thank you for supporting my young learners!
