Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Have you ever seen a 3 or 4 year old draw different shapes. They all look the same! I want to provide my students with tools that can create conventional looking shapes so they can show others the genius that is really inside their minds!

My students are in Pre-K.

They range in age from 3 to 4 years old. Some of them will turn five. We have a diverse group of students in our class. Our school is an inner city school that receives Title 1 funds. We are located next to government housing. We are a Museum themed school. We have integrated the Common Core with Museum education.

My Project

In Pre-K we learn a lot about shapes, patterns, and our environment. Since students at this age are still working on fine motor skills, it is hard for them to express in written form what they are seeing. Squares and circles look the same. It is also hard for them to cut out shapes accurately with scissors. By giving the children another way to create shapes, they can express themselves in a way others will understand. It will build their self confidence when others are able to see their creations and understand what they are trying to "say."

The shape cutters and geometric shape ink stamps will help build student independence.

The students will be able to cut out shapes that they want by pressing a button or lever. The geometric ink stamps will allow the children to scaffold their fine motor development. The students will be able to use this across subject areas. They will be able to create collages in art, patterns in math, pictures of people in their environment, and wherever the children choose to use their imagination!
