Shame Erased!

My students need basic supplies. Poverty is shaming. Lack of parental academic support is shaming. Charity can be shaming. By providing pencils, notebooks... BASIC TOOLS to all students in the class, shame will be erased.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. O'Gorman's classroom raised $490

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Sophomores are the best! They are so funny, and actually, pretty honest...some might say, brutally honest, but I prefer that to the contrary. Maturity is exploding. No longer are they freshman (a challenging group), but emerging into adults. Quite honestly, it is an honor to watch them!

A HUGE component of their academic development relies on our ability to promote their emotional and mental wellness.

In the case of my students, students from the East Side of Chicago, a very diverse population, this can be a challenge. Let me explain. The upside of public education in this area is also the downside. Students enter our doors from all types of homes. Homes with loving supportive parents, homes from the contrary. Homes that are well kept, organized, and support teachers and learning, homes of the contrary. Homes where substance abuse is not present, and homes of the contrary. Homes with parents who are hard working and send their sons and daughters with school supplies, and the contrary.

My Project

When a student enters a classroom without a pencil, pen, or paper, they are set up for ridicule and shame. They are defensive, and will not work. They will not work independently, with a peer, or within a small group; it is sad to watch. Learning suffers, grades suffer. Teachers use their money to supplement, but cannot continually do this. Heck, teachers are working to support their own biological children in this manner! And, January brings with it that "replenishing" of supplies. Christmas bills are arriving, and that hits all of us, the demographics of my kids' families especially hard. Having these supplies ready and waiting for them when they return to school January 8, 2018, will be a great surprise for all of them. Shame erased!

With shame erased, emotional and mental wellness can begin.

Shame is a brick wall to learning, please help melt away some of that mortar, and help my kids!
