Shakespeare Is For Kids Too!

My Students

"Those children can't learn Shakespeare! They are too young," someone told me. I am determined to prove them wrong. My fourth graders CAN learn Shakespeare!

I teach fourth grade children who have been identified as gifted in an urban school system in Alabama.

These children come from fourteen different area schools, a majority being Title I schools. I see a different group daily for four hours. During this limited time I try to give them the opportunity to learn what they would not be able to experience in their regular classroom. There is no funding for gifted education materials. We have no money for any type of supplies or enrichment so I depend on donors such as those who support Donorschoose.org.

My Project

As teenagers, many students have become afraid of the classics. They have been told "Shakespeare is hard" or "Shakespeare is boring." Older children come to the classics with these preconceived notions. By introducing Shakespeare to my students while they are still in elementary school, they can build familiarity with the story before they struggle with the very old language. There are many great print resources and adaptations of Shakespeare for children that I can use to really bring the greatest playwright of all time to life for my students. My students need sixteen books of Shakespeare's plays as well as biographies about his life and the Globe Theatre so that they can have an opportunity to experience Shakespeare.

Can you imagine a group of third and fourth graders performing "A Midsummer Night's Dream" or perhaps "The Tempest?" If you choose to support my project, you will make this a reality in the lives of my students.

By funding this project, you will make it possible for my students to have a resource that would not normally be available to them.
