Do you remember the first time you read Shakespeare? Hopefully it wasn't via photo copies your teacher had to make. For many of my 9th grade students, this will be the first time they're reading Shakespeare. I would love for them to have the actual book instead of photo copies.
My students are awesome!
However, they attend a school that has been severely hurt by budget cuts. We have not received money for new books in two years and have had to make do with photo copies.
My students devour those photo copies none the less. I would love to surprise them with actual books that they can take home and make their own.
My Project
We will be comparing the issues in Shakespeare's "Othello" with the issues that face our world today.
Unfortunately, I think many of my students will be able to relate to Othello's character, so we will spend time comparing his issues with our own.
Our essential questions will focus on what it means to feel isolated and be considered "other."
My students are always telling me that they want to read Shakespeare. They've heard of all of his plays but have mostly never read any of them.
These wonderful kids deserve to be exposed to as many forms of literature as possible. What freshman year can be considered complete without a little Shakespeare?
Please save us from making and reading from photo copies.
