My Students
I service at-risk 4 year olds in Detroit, who are excited about learning. My curriculum is play- and inquiry-based, so we use lots of hands-on activities to learn and understand new concepts. By the end of this school year, I would like my students to be able keep a steady beat and create new patterns
I teach at-risk preschoolers in Detroit.
Many of my families are single-parent homes and have very low income. My students are very sweet, kind, and loving, despite their home life. This year, my students are very inquisitive and soak up new concepts. Many parents tell me that their child tells them in depth things going on in our class.
My school is located in the city of Detroit, surrounded by several vacant homes and lots, along with burned homes. The school itself, however, is great. It has been recognized as one of the highest-performing schools in the district. Our population is mainly African Americans, but we do have a huge Bangladesh community.
My Project
My students will use these musical instruments like drums, tambourines, and cymbals during large and small groups. I plan to use them to compliment our songs together as a whole and to teach patterns and rhythm during small groups. The books will be great visuals for the students and could activate prior knowledge in the minds. Exploring these instruments could spark an interests in music and could possibly inspire the next great musician.
The donation of these instruments could make a great impression on these young learners.
Many of them have only seen instruments on TV; therefore they have no real knowledge of how they work or sound live. Music is an experience that has been taken from many schools due to budget cuts. I would love to expose my students to music and maybe inspire them to pursue a musical career.
