My students need a seismograph model in order to translate the results from the shake table into tangible information to help them better understand earthquakes and the impact of an earthquake on structures.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As a science teacher in a low income public school with a student body of 636 students; 98% of which are on free/reduced lunch, and 93% of the students being minority students. These students have limited access to supplies at home and in the classroom as well.
I strive to give my students experiences that relate to their interests and engaged them in learning new content material.
However, this is difficult with limited supplies and being unable to ask students to bring in additional materials for projects.
My Project
With the shake table and seismograph the students are going to be designing and building earthquake resistant structures. They will be able to test their buildings on the shake table. The seismograph will be used to record the earthquake activity. This will allow the students to compare the different sizes of earthquakes and the consequent amount of damage produced by them as well as testing their overall engineering and planning skills for their structures.
These materials will go beyond even this upcoming school year as they will be used year after year in my classroom reaching hundreds of students.
The materials requested will allow students to take their knowledge and deepen it by having a hands-on inquiry to investigate and put their knowledge to the test.
