Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My class was added in mid-July due to the explosion of kids on the Spectrum in New Jersey.
My students are inner-city, lower socio-economic preschoolers on the Autism Spectrum.
Most are non-verbal. Parents are new arrivals to this country who are doing their best to help their children.
As a result, I am in a room with very few materials other than the ones that I have brought from home or purchased myself.
They enjoy playing with cars and Play-Doh. Although we do not have much in our classroom, it is clear that the children are enjoying their first school experience.
My Project
These new sensory items such as sensory balls, a balance beam, foam paint, bean bags, and liquid-filled shapes will provide my students with exposure to new tactile experiences and help them to better tolerate their environment.
Sensory play is a great way for children to enhance the use of their senses, develop new skills and manage their environment.
In addition, sensory play supports language development, cognitive growth and fine and gross motor skills.
These objects will enable students to develop a tolerance to a variety of textures and experiences.
This will help the children now and as they grow to interact with their environment in a positive way.
