My Project
In kindergarten, students are just beginning to develop their number sense—learning how numbers work, how they relate to one another, and how they can be used to solve problems. This stage is so important because it sets the tone for how children feel about math for years to come. That’s why I’m working to bring more hands-on, engaging math tools into our classroom, starting with a simple yet powerful resource: Shake and Add math boxes. These help them visualize different ways to make a number—like seeing that 5 can be made with 2 red and 3 yellow, or 4 red and 1 yellow. It's a playful and concrete way to build essential math skills like addition, number decomposition, pattern recognition, and even the early stages of algebraic thinking.
These tools make math tangible.
For young children, this kind of learning experience is far more impactful than simply using worksheets. It meets them at their developmental level by allowing them to learn through play, movement, and discovery. Not only does it help them understand the how of math, but it builds their confidence and encourages a positive mindset around learning.
