Shae's Outreach Project: Sharing Student Work Via Our Blog
My students need a scanner/copier to upload and share work samples to our classroom website, for use on our interactive Smartboard, and for saving copies in portfolios.
Do you remember creating projects in the classroom and wishing you could share it with family and friends? My students are avid writers, but they have not yet had a chance to share their work beyond the confines of our classroom walls. I hope to change that with the funding of this project.
My students are an enthusiastic group of fourth graders attending a public elementary school in southern Maryland.
We are inspired by the world around us and love to use the natural world to jump start our imaginations and write creative one-of-a-kind stories. Recently, my horse Shae came to our school to teach students about horses in relationship to Maryland agriculture. Some students commented to me that they would love to be able to share their drawings, artwork and stories about Harvest Day with family members in faraway states - this got me thinking... we could REALLY use a classroom scanner/copier!! So, between Shae and my students, this project developed!
My Project
Through having immediate access to a classroom scanner, students will be able to scan their projects and upload them for instant sharing! They will learn about file management and learn procedures to ensure they share work online safely and protect their anonymity. Additionally, the built-in copier/printer feature ensures that our class will decrease the stress of our school copiers and reduce the amount of wasted paper in having "extra copies" of worksheets on hand. If a student looses a packet, we can make just one additional copy, not have 2 or 3 extra copies that may or may not be needed. Students at our school take "Going Green" very seriously, and every little bit helps! This will also reduce student stress as it is not always feasible to access a copier during class time for these one time copies.
This project has the potential for students to truly take ownership over sharing their work with the world.
Additionally, with the limited access our school has to scanners, we just aren't utilizing the full power of our Smartboards! I find myself wishing there was a way to instantly share a student's creative work with the class. Students learn from each other, not just the teacher, and a classroom scanner opens up a whole new set of ways to integrate technology into the classroom.
