My Students

Hal Varien - Chief Economist at Google said “I keep saying that the sexy job in the next 10 years will be statisticians. And I’m not kidding.” Data is all around us. Today's students need to understand how to interpret and analyze big data. That is what AP Statistics is all about.

Thirty students have opted to take college level Statistics next year while still in high school.

They realize that this course will teach them how to THINK. This course is relevant to all careers in our data driven society. I hope to prepare them to score well enough on the AP Statistics exam in May 2016 to earn college credit. My students are 100% minority, with the vast majority living at or below the poverty level. Only a handful have two parents at home. They understand that a solid education is their key to upward mobility and financial independence. They want to challenge themselves. They ALL plan to attend and GRADUATE from college. I aspire to assist them in realizing their goals.

My Project

The books I'm requesting help to explain various concepts that we cover in this course. The author breaks down complex topics and relates them to "stories" that bring the concepts to life. Topics that are covered include: means vs. medians; skewed data; types of data; normal distributions; goodness of fit; confidence intervals, sample size and power, p-values, t-tests, regression and many more. The #2 mechanical pencils will be used for note-taking as well as bubbling in scantron sheets for the multiple choice section of exams. The colored pencils will be used for creating graphs to analyze data sets. The 3-hole punch mechanisms will be used to organize and store copies of prior AP Statistics exam free response questions and their rubrics that we complete, grade and review in class.

The students who signed up for this class deserve quality resources.

They have dreams, goals and ambitions. Their more affluent peers have parents who can purchase reference materials for AP classes; my students don't have this luxury. Other than the textbooks that the school provides, all the resources that they have access to are provided by the kindness and generosity of citizen and corporate donors at Donorschoose like you.
