My Students

I work in a rural middle school. I have a unique position as a special education teacher that allows me the opportunity to get to know hundreds of students with varying abilities every school year. The students throughout the entire school are the best students I could ask for. Being in a rural setting it is difficult to provide experiences outside the classroom that will assist students outside of school and help provide them with a better understanding of the careers that are available to them.

I began a sewing class last year to bring open more doors, increase creativity, and provide new experiences for my students that will better their lives--plus they can take the skills home to their families.

The students were very excited to learn how to hand sew patches and embellishments onto clothing and other fabrics for themselves and their families. They create projects for their family members while utilizing a sewing machine for the first time. They were very proud of their accomplishments. I have several students who asked for a sewing machine for Christmas to work on sewing projects at home.

My Project

Sewing is an important skills that many people are afraid to undertake. In my sewing class, I introduce students to the joy of sewing. We utilize sewing machines and hand sewing to create new works or art. I show them basic techniques that they use while sewing projects that interest them.

My students will be creating sewing projects that will encourage a love of sewing and inspire creativity.

We will be using these supplies to create hair scrunchies, drawstring bags from recycled t-shirts, Christmas/Easter ornaments, baskets, and mending torn clothing. Students will utilize re-purposed and recycled fabrics to create new and useful sewing projects.
