This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Have you ever wished you could fix a rip in your favorite shirt, sew on a button that popped off, or make your own Halloween costume? If you answered yes to any of these questions you know why learning to sew is an important skill, a skill that fits perfect with theater.

I work at a low income middle school in Nevada.

My students enjoy learning things they can feel proud of. I work with about 100, 6-8th grade students, these students love to create things and often have great ideas. My students like to make things they can show to others.

My Project

The items I would like to purchase can help my students learn a life skill that is related to theater. Teaching students a basic skill like sewing can inspire creativity and open up ideas of new career choices. Students will learn how to fix their own clothing so they don't have to be embarrassed to wear hand me downs. They will learn how to do basic stitches that can help them create costumes for their performances. My students need sewing kits, cloth and patterns to learn how to sew so they can create costumes and as an added bonus, have a useful life skill.

I believe sewing is a skill that everyone should know...think about how knowing how to sew could help you, or if you do know how to sew think of all the times you use that skill.

Many schools no longer have home economics classes, so this may be the only opportunity these students have to learn this skill.
