My Students

I work in a rural middle school. I have a unique position as a special education teacher that allows me the opportunity to get to know hundreds of students with varying abilities every school year. The students throughout the entire school are the best students I could ask for. Being in a rural setting it is difficult to provide experiences outside the classroom that will assist students outside of school and help provide them with a better understanding of the careers that are available to them.

I began a sewing class last year to bring open more doors, increase creativity and provide new experiences for my students that will better their lives and they can take the skills home to their families.

The students were very excited to learn how to hand sew patches and embellishments onto clothing and other fabrics for themselves and their family. They created projects for their family members while utilizing a sewing machine for the first time. They were very proud of their accomplishments. I had a student who asked for a sewing machine for Christmas to work on sewing projects at home.

My Project

They will first learn the basics of sewing and how useful it is in everyday life and in their home. Students will learn how to use basic sewing skills that they will be able to utilize at home and later in life.

My students will be sewing projects for the community and their families.

Students will be creating useful household supplies for their family. Students will be sewing projects for the nursing home and other community organizations in need. I have a goal to bring parents into the school to showcase student projects and allow parents to purchase class made projects.
