Sewing Empathy

Help me give my students sewing machines so they may design and create Toys for Refugees, clothing, and more!

My Project

Last year, our classes donated blankets, stuffed animals, games and puzzles to one of our local Refugee Community Centers. Learning what most refugees have to give up, discovering how many refugees are children, and creating a feeling of belonging and safety were very important to our students.

We 3D printed game pieces and buttons, with your generous donations of filament, for our toys.

This was something that only 6th and 7th graders at our school was able to do.

It was a HUGE hit! The kids loved being able to do something good in our community, and most wanted to create more than one item. However, we only had one sewing machine, which slowed the process down quite a bit.

Most kids had never worked with patterns before, or had the opportunity to sew. Adding these to our maker space would allow more projects to be done, as well as after school sewing club to help out our school musical.
