Sew What?

My students need fabric, filler and thread for our Sew What upcycling class. They will be using these items to re-purpose old clothing, blankets and more into new creations that are both useful and beautiful.

My Students

I teach in a program designed to provide the least restrictive environment for students identified as gifted. Once a week identified students are bused from the twenty elementary schools around our district to our building. Each grade attends one full day of the week. Monday I teach fifth grade, Tuesday is fourth grade, Wednesday is third grade etc. The moment they walk in our doors, students are able to take ownership of their learning and enjoy experiences that may not be available to them otherwise. Our students choose their own classes from a variety of topics based largely on art and STEM philosophies. Our program is always evolving based on what our students want to learn. We incorporate problem-based learning, respectful communication, and critical thinking skills into much of what we do. This is a safe and comfortable place for our students to be themselves, surrounded by other kiddos that share a love for learning.

My Project

Students today are growing up in a "disposable" society. Many products that they see on store shelves are single use items, that are tossed away without a thought once they have served an immediate purpose. Often times no thought is given to the carbon footprint being left by this trend.

This class gives students the skills needed to "Upcycle" outdated, or unwanted, textiles that would have made their way into a landfill if not given new life and purpose.

Students will be using a combination of hand and machine sewing to turn donated items into products that serve a specific function.

We will take old jeans and make tool belts for our "Makers" class, dress shirts will be transformed into aprons for our "Cooking class, and old fuzzy sweaters will find new life as animal beds which will be donated to local shelters through our "Pets" class.

The major focus of this class is giving students an opportunity to see that items that may be viewed as disposable by one person can be re-purposed and reused by another, helping our environment in the process.
