My Students

My school is charged with educating an incredibly diverse population, including a very large group of students who are refugees. Because of our high number of English Language Learners and our population receiving Special Education services, many of my students are still beginning readers.

In our township, over 73 languages are spoken among our students.

They have rich cultural heritages, and beautiful stories of resilience.

My students take their education very seriously, and have a desire to become fluent readers. My students are active, joyful, and eager to learn. They enjoy reading books that are a reflection of themselves.

My Project

During our Discovery period, students who are not in music classes get the opportunity to discover all sorts of new skills that they might not otherwise have the opportunity to try. My Discovery Class tends to be mostly boys, and people are always surprised to know how much boys enjoy sewing. In the past, we've sewn by hand, and my students have always loved it so much. They have such creative ideas and in the past have asked me to teach them how to make vests, pillows, hats, scrunchies, etc., but we haven't had the sewing machines to allow them the ability to tackle those more complex projects.

With the purchase of these sewing machines, students will not only learn a valuable life-skill, but they will be able to take their creativity to a new level.

Once students know how to use the machines, they'll be encouraged to explore how to make and use patterns, how to properly measure, and how to improve sewing technique.

I'm looking forward to seeing all of the creations my students will make, and watching which students particularly take to this new skill. Who knows...I may have the next quilt artist, or fashion designer in my classroom and not even know it!
