My Students

I work in a rural middle school. I have a unique position as a special education teacher that allows me the opportunity to get to know hundreds of students with varying abilities every school year. The students throughout the entire school are the best students I could ask for. Being in a rural setting it is difficult to provide experiences outside the classroom that will assist students outside of school and help provide them with a better understanding of the careers that are available to them.

I began a sewing class in 2018 to bring open more doors, increase creativity and provide new experiences for my students that will better their lives plus they can take the skills home to their families.

The students were very excited to learn how to hand sew patches and embellishments onto clothing and other fabrics for themselves and their families. They create projects for their family members while utilizing a sewing machine for the first time. They were very proud of their accomplishments. I have several students who asked for a sewing machine for Christmas to work on sewing projects at home.

My Project

These materials will be used in both my sewing class and my special education math classes. In math class we will be learning about the coordinate grid while making string art. In sewing class we will be making fabric bins and fabric balloon animals.

My students need supplies to make math and sewing class fun and creative.

We will use the supplies to encourage learning and creativity. Students will use math to create one of a kind designs and help them see that math is everywhere. Students will make creative stuffed balloon animals while learning to straight stitch on a machine and turn projects right side out.
