This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I want to provide an opportunity for students to create a project using their hands. Sewing will allow them to try something different, meet other students, work at their own pace, and apply steps to a project that will take time to complete.
Providing new experience makes learning exciting.
Our students come from a low socioeconomic environment and over 65% get free or reduced price lunch. The population is mostly Hispanic. We have a wonderful staff who care about the learning and growth of our students. One of the goals this school year is project-based learning. We serve about 700 students in a middle school environment, and our students are eager to learn new things.
My Project
My students need two sewing machines to learn how to sew. I want to incorporate sewing skills as an extra curricular activity. My goal is to help students take on a complicated project from start to finish.
After learning how to use a needle and thread, students will be introduced to the sewing machine and practice sewing on tag board paper. Projects will include pillow cases, paper picture frame, and purses plus other projects. Students will learn how to follow the steps of a project by creating, cutting, fitting pieces together and sewing the pieces together.
Extracurricular activities will enhance student learning by providing them new skills in an area previously unknown to them.
Learning how to sew will provide them with a skill that they can incorporate in their adult lives.
